A great venue for a holiday or longer for all the right reasons, it can be
all things to all men—and ladies of course.
It is essentially an Aegean island linked by a bridge of land to the
mainland which explains the “island” style of culture here, always a bit
better than the “mainland”, this is a good thing.
Arrival at Bodrum airport is usually hassle free and fast, putting you on
the road to Bodrum itself, the main town of the area. You will proceed along
good roads, through long flat salt marshes, home to vast amounts of wildlife
in particular flamingos, lots to see here.

The road gradually rises to a point where you turn a bend
and Bodrum is laid before you, Crusader castle to the left,
seacraft of every type in front of you. It’s an ancient town
[Halikarnos] with a lively vibrant bazaar atmosphere. Caters
to the young teens, boatniks and the more adventurous
tourist, me? I just like to visit. It oozes history with
archaeology just everywhere, this I like a lot. The town
sits in a natural amphitheatre within the coast so it is
always a few degrees warmer in Bodrum than elsewhere. Travel
time from the airport 45min approx.
The peninsular is served by a main coastal road with a
couple of link roads over the mountains, we will go around
the coast clockwise taking us first to Gumbet, again a
youthful place of hen night and stag parties in the main
with remote oasis’s dotted around. Bitez next, balmy and
laid back, good beaches and great watersports, a nice place
for families and saga louts. Ortakent on the main road is
like a little Beirut but turn down to the beach areas and it
is as Bitez; don’t let the town put you off. Travel time
from Bodrum to Ortakent 20min approx

Now to our favourite, Turgutreis. First good thing, its
flat—no big hills or slopes, fairly wheelchair friendly.
It’s easy to navigate around the town which still retains a
village atmosphere, good selection of restaurants, an
obligatory bar street and oodles of shops. Saturday market
is the biggest on the peninsular bringing coach loads in by
the dozen. A peaceful and secure place to holiday with many
tourists returning each year to meet again with friends.
For the potential property owner, Turgutreis marks the end
of the areas where foreigners may not buy so Turgutreis has
a good population of ex pat residents, one the whole a
welcoming crowd, eager to help and advise, I like em!.
Travel time from Ortakent 15min approx.
Next up is Gumusluk [Myndos], an ancient fortified port with
the cutest bay, wonderful sunsets and loads of fish
restaurants .For a romantic waterside meal to impress a
lady; they are great, for a budget though, step back from
the seafront for better value. Again tripping over
archaeology particularly Byzantine, you could fall in love
with Myndos so easily.
Travel time from Turgutreis 15min approx
Along the coast now to Yalikavak, passing acres of hillside
holiday homes, not the greatest things to look at but the
views from them must be stunning. The town itself is lovely;
it’s still a village really,
and the new marina hasn’t spoiled the look. Many non Turks
have made Yalikavak their holiday home with no small amount
making it their permanent home.
Travel time from Gumusluk 15min approx
This really is as far as my experience qualifies me to
comment on, but next comes Gundogan, Turkbuku and Torba, we
have visited each briefly, all of them picturesque bays on
the quiet secluded side, we enjoyed them all. As I become
more familiar with the rest of the peninsular I will post it
up.
Our experience of the Bodrum area both as a tourists and as
residents is without doubt positive, give it a go, we did
and never looked back.
